Teachers' Wellbeing
On this Teachers' Day, I want to share my thoughts on Teacher's Wellbeing as its an integral part of educational environment. I believe, it all comes down to meeting one's own requirements, expectations, and sense of fulfilment at work.
We are going to talk about teachers’ wellbeing, but what is it all about? It is positive emotional state that comes to an individual with the fulfillment of personal needs, expectations and job satisfaction and thus influencing the school and classroom atmosphere and students’ achievement.
THE
IMPACT IN CLASSROOMS
To promote a
netter classroom environment along with high quality learning atmosphere for
the students, we also need to promote our teacher’s wellbeing which will in
return enable the institution to succeed. Investing in teachers’ wellbeing not
only contributes towards improved health and wellbeing for teachers and
students but also ensures learning outcomes.
This is because at the core of the entire teaching-learning process lies the effort, enthusiasm and energy all combined in one as the commitment of the teacher.
WHY IS
TEACHERS’ WELL-BEING IMPORTANT?
Teachers’
wellbeing has always been associated not only with their physical health but
also with their emotions and stress levels which directly impacts the students
and on their colleagues. It is essential to address and support teachers and
other support staff who often experience high levels of stress. This will help
them feel a sense of belongingness.
Many factors
influence and undermine teachers’ conditions like:
- · Too much demand in the job
- · Limited Resources
- · Lack of support or growth opportunities
- · Inadequate pay scale and policies that inhibit teachers’ creativity and ideas and negative school climate
- · Resentment at work
Research
shows that there is a positive relationship between teacher’s motivation,
learner’s performance and well-being. It is positively related to school and
classroom climate and pupil achievement.
The
teacher’s pressure is linked with the results of the students in class and
increases their scrutiny level. Their professional success is measured largely
by students’ performance in standardized examination. Their profession builds
tomorrows future, but the respect and concern they deserve are not as expected.
Teachers are less likely to report their feelings and emotions when compared to
other professions.
Major
factors that affect the teachers are:
- · Availability of support material from the institution
- · Required resources to address the students’ needs
- · Lack of appreciation
HOW TO
IMPROVE ON THEIR WELLBEING?
The best way
to shape a healthy environment in the schools for the teachers and the students
is by identifying the underlying causes of stress which is constant and
ongoing. To promote Teacher- Wellness, institutes must start working to
cultivate such an atmosphere with a positive approach. This will prove to be
helpful for supportive School communities with positive outcomes for the
students if the ultimate goal of education is to promote student’s success,
teachers’ wellbeing. It has to be of central consideration. Teachers cannot be
expected to try harder and manage their well-being. The management body of the
systems and policies play a very important and crucial role in supporting
teachers’ wellbeing and our teachers today deserve far better!!!
